Nicholas Owens

Nicholas A. Owens is known throughout the Indianapolis community as a freelance choreographer, director, dancer and the co-founder and former Artistic Director of Kenyettá Dance Company. His goal is to create, encourage, and provide training/performance opportunities to aspiring dancers seeking professional dance experience. In 2010 he formed his own modern dance company, NODC (Nicholas Owens Dance Company). He strives as an ambassador for the art of dance through each performance which demonstrates his commitment to artistic excellence, individual achievement, cultural relevance and social engagement. His training includes contemporary modern, ballet, jazz, African dance forms, tap and hip-hop dance. Currently he teaches at the Indiana Ballet Conservatory, Dancer’s Studio and Iibada Dance Company. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Butler University where he has taught freshman jazz. Currently he is a full time dance professor at Broad Ripple High School.

Credits for direction and choreography include Kenyettá Dance Company’s productions of: Excerpts of Dreams, Signs of the Times, Out of the Box, Speaking Without Words, Groundwork Suites, Breaking The Silence, Black Dance Matters, Black Box Theory, Sincerely Love and The Skin We're In; Indianapolis Civic Theatre’s production of Ragtime the Musical, Pike High Schools productions of The Color Purple, Shrek the Musical and The Wiz, Dance Kaleidoscope’s productions of America The Modern, Love Is, Mad for Musicals, Super Soul, Ray & Ella and Voices of A Generation and Divas, The Cupboards musical productions of The Color Purple and The Five Heartbeats, The Asante Children's Theatre original musical production of "Genius" To The Beat of Soul and much more. He also serves as the Assistant Artistic Director of Iibada Dance Company.
